Daytime Sleep Studies

Sleep Study During The Day

In addition to nighttime studies, some patients require daytime testing to evaluate excessive daytime sleepiness or sleep disorders such Narcolepsy. Daytime studies are performed after previous sleep study night. We perform two different daytime tests: the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT). During each of these studies, testing is performed for a brief periods during the day. The procedures for the MSLT and MWT will be reviewed for you in advance for your appointment.

The daytime MSLT and MWT are performed according to standardized protocols developed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The MSLT is always performed following a previous sleep study night, but the MWT, in certain cases, may not require this previous sleep study night.

Preparation for Daytime Studies

Daytime studies require a full day of evaluation until approximately 5 pm. We will provide breakfast and lunch for you, and if you wish to bring any noncaffeinated drinks or snacks with you there is a refrigerator and microwave available for your use.

In between the daytime testing periods, we would like you to remain quietly awake within the Center. You may step outside, but you cannot drive a car, exercise, or leave the premises of the Center. There is a television available for your use in the Center.

If you have questions about the daytime procedure, please feel free to ask us prior to your testing day.
